Fingal County Council Arts Office and BLOCK T are delighted to announce Laura Skehan as the successful recipient of the Graduate Award 2016. As part of an ongoing commitment to emerging artists Fingal County Council's Arts Office offer a one-year Graduate Studio Award in BLOCK T with a solo exhibition in 2017, which is part of FUEL, Block T's Visual Arts Programme dedicated to the support and professional development of recent graduates. The Graduate Award, which commences in October 2016, will provide an ideal environment for Laura to develop her practice and an opportunity to network with other artists.

Laura Skehan from Blanchardstown, is a recent Fine Art Graduate of the DIT School of Creative Arts. She also studied at École europeenne superieure d'art de Bretagne, (EESAB), Lorient in 2014. Laura Skehan’s practice explores the body’s dynamic and diverse relationship with the physical landscape, with attention to forgotten activity in overlooked spaces. Using movement as a code for this delicate relation, she plays with abstract narrative, working primarily in video, sculpture and installation. Alternating between choreographed and improvised movement as a vernacular, her work explores ideas that were investigated in Aristotelian physics, paying particular attention to the Aitia, or ‘causes of change’. Through sculpture-making, Skehan identifies common patterns between corporeal movement and the activity of natural elements.
